About the Auckland Zen Centre

It has been twenty years since the Auckland Zen Centre first opened its doors. The Centre was established by two students of Roshi Bodhin Kjolhede, Roshi Amala Wrightson, a Zen teacher and priest of the Three Jewels Order, and her husband Richard von Sturmer, a lay member of the Order. Amala-roshi and Richard are both Auckland-born, but undertook more than ten years' of Zen training under Roshi Kjolhede at the Rochester Zen Center in upstate New York. Amala-roshi was given formal permission to teach by Roshi Kjolhede in 2004, and in the same year she and Richard co-founded Auckland Zen Centre. She was sanctioned as a full Dharma heir in 2012. Richard will be given formal permission to teach by Roshi Kjolhede during the 20th Anniversary celebrations.
