From the Museum’s collection, each artwork in this exhibition conveys a perspective on times and events that shaped Te-Matau-a-Māui, Hawke’s Bay and Aotearoa, New Zealand into what they are today.

Some of the art works were created at the time of the event, the artists bearing witnesses to that history. Other works reflect on our past from the present, offering perspectives on events that influenced who we are, and how we live today. Many of the works are deeply political, while others simply represent the era in which they were created.

What is clear, is that all the artworks express a perspective conveyed through a language that is unique to their makers.
