Serious sports fishing enthusiasts and first timers alike will descend on beautiful, rugged Lake Ferry Beach for a day of fun, fishing and fierce competition this Wellington Anniversary Weekend, for the Lake Ferry Beach Fishing Contest.
This iconic Wairarapa event has been running for 25 years and has previously attracted around 400 participants. The event has already received huge support from local businesses and sponsors. The top prize is a Suzuki King Quad Bike for the heaviest kawhai caught. Surf fishing rigs can be won in other categories and there are separate sections for men and women entrants, with dozens of spot prizes at the weigh in.
It is organised by the South Wairarapa Lions & Lionesses, and this time will be in support of new equipment for Wairarapa Search & Rescue.
Organisers say they'd like to see business and corporate group teams pitting their skills on this spectacular stretch of coastline, for a great day out in Wairarapa: "It's only 40 minutes drive from Featherston to this slice of wild Wairarapa coast that's not known widely outside the region."
The contest is a great spectator sport but there's also plenty to do for those not into fishing, from visiting nearby vineyards, to shopping at Martinborough and other attractions such as the historic Lake Ferry Hotel. Traveling towards Cape Palliser you pass through the Ngawi fishing village on the way to the Palliser light house. Baby seals can be photographed swimming in the rock pools below.
The event runs from 9am-3pm, with the highlight the Weigh-In at the Lake Ferry Hotel, named for the Ferry which used to ply the waters of Lake Onoke transporting stock and supplies for the settlers travelling around the coast from Wellington. Nearby is Lake Wairarapa, the largest wetlands area in the lower North Island, with views across the water to the Kaikoura mountain range.
Tickets can be purchased online, or on the day at Lake Ferry Hotel or Whangaimoana from 7am.
