A celebration together, a learning together to enjoy together - Matariki unique to NZ.
At this stage we have a week-long event planned for 23-28 June 2014 and the programme outline is as follows.
Interactive Art Symposium: We supply the materials for artists to create works over the week, and offer opportunities for the public to observe, learn, participate. Classes and workshops by veteran artists and craftsmen
Korero: A series of talks by local personalities on the history of Matariki and Tairua. Questions may be submitted beforehand
Coromandel Day Tour : Guided circuit of the Coromandel visiting heritage sites and landmarks.
Mahi rakau: Workshops on kite making, poi, weaving and other crafts
Forest walk with workshop on traditional medicines
Astronomy presentation and Matariki sighting
Final celebration on Saturday 28 June:
Mahi toi: Exhibition and stalls of arts and crafts
Waka ama, Waka toa: Display on the harbour
Kapa haka: Evening concert. Outdoor stage on the Pepe Reserve
Kai: Hangi and food
Kite flying: Using kites made in workshop and also open participation.
