Some partnerships are just meant to be: Beethoven and Brahms, virtuoso superstars Nicola Benedetti and Leonard Elschenbroich, the NZSO and Douglas Lilburn.
Lilburn was a homesick student in London when he composed the Festival Overture and its light and joyful themes reflect both his longing and his deep love for his homeland.
The Brahms Concerto for Violin and Cello is also a deeply personal work, filled with yearning melodies. In the hands of power couple Benedetti and Elschenbroich, the intimacy and deep emotion Brahms captured will come to the fore in a performance that is sure to warm our hearts.
Such a powerful evening of musical partnerships is brought to a triumphant finish with Beethoven’s incomparable Symphony No. 5. Continuing his exploration of masterworks with the NZSO, in Maestro de Waart’s hands nothing will come close to hearing those famous opening bars.
