Celebrate the final days of Summer at Whakaipo Lodge's Summer Concert and support the great work of Bike Taupo & KidsBikeTaupo. "Blues, Ballads and Banter" with Laura Collins and the Back Porch Blues Band, with special guest Andrew London.
Laura Collins and the Back Porch Blues Band are planning a true back porch experience for this year’s Whakaipo Lodge Summer Concert, with guest guitarist/singer Andrew London who has featured at both Whakaipo Concerts thus far.
Wellington based Laura Collins is first and foremost a performer. She likes to move between ballsy blues and soulful ballads, making them her own, backed by a quartet of long-time Kiwi legends.
Well-known singer songwriter Wayne Mason features in his ‘alter ego’ guise of boogie/blues piano player. Think Fats Domino, Dr John, Professor Longhair and you’ll be in the right honky tonk.
Guitarist John O’Connor is well-respected in the Wellington music scene, having worked with Kiri Te Kanawa, Mark Williams, BB King, Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley, and was a founder member of legendary Wellington band Redeye in the mid 1970s.
In the engine room is George Barris on upright bass (in his early days part of ‘Highway) and Pete Cogswell on the unusual ‘back porch’ drums; a kit he assembled himself from a cajon (a wooden drum that doubles as a seat) and a djembe (African hand-drum) instead of the regular snare drum.
“Having a pulled-back rhythm section allows us to play at a lower volume and bring a really warm vocal-led sound. This is swinging hard-driving music for dancing or singing along - pack your dance pumps and bring out your bling”.
You’ll hear classics by artists such as Nina Simone, Koko Taylor, Etta James, Bonnie Raitt and Laura's take on some unsuspecting men including Muddy Waters and BB King.
Laura says "Blues comes straight from the heart and that’s just how I like it, it’s accessible, joyful, heart full music and not only that it makes me want to move – what’s not to like?”
Andrew London has been a regular around Taupo events for some time, with his trio Hot Club Sandwich and country-rockers The Cattlestops. Along with Wayne Mason, he frequently travels and records with Collins in Too Many Chiefs a singer/songwriter collaboration.
Quote from Review from Manawatu Standard June 2nd, 2014
"The Back Porch Band had a great feel about it ranging from solidly funky to gloriously gospel, their backing vocals superbly supporting this sassy songstress. With each number given a highly original blues sound, this band fairly rocked the joint..."
