An Interview With Charles Bukowski.
“For those who believe in God, most of the big questions are answered. But for those of us who can’t readily accept the God formula, the big answers don’t remain stone-written. We adjust to new conditions and discoveries. We are pliable. Love need not be a command nor faith a dictum. I am my own god. We are here to unlearn the teachings of the church, state, and our educational system. We are here to drink beer. We are here to kill war. We are here to laugh at the odds and live our lives so well that Death will tremble to take us.”
Theoradical Hobohemians are back with their third show for National Poetry Day. This year we
are pleased to present “An Interview with Charles Bukowski” who was once called the “Laureate of
American Lowlife” by time magazine. It will be a wild night with NZ veteran actor Mick Innes portraying this most revered American poet/writer. Jean-Paul Sartre called him America’s greatest poet.
We kick off at 6pm at our favourite bar, Shanghai Lil’s with a Bukowski Open Poetry Mic. The play,
written by Auckland writer Ruth Bioletti will start at 7pm. Our guest musician is Grey Lynn’s cellist
Paul Van Houtte. He will play a piece dedicated to Bukowski during the play. Charles loved classical
music. As he said, “If you’re going to try, go all the way. Otherwise, don’t even start.” Be there to be square!
