Nick Brightwell is the young rising star of blues (and beyond) guitar artistry in New Zealand – he’s the only New Zealander with a degree in finger-picking guitar styles. Al Young is a blues veteran – he’s been singing and playing all over New Zealand since the mid-1960s.
But the generation gap will be bridged on Saturday (July 27) at One-2-One Cafe when Nick and Al combine for an evening of the music that unites them – the hard-core Delta blues sound from Mississippi and the styles it has generated. Nick has been cutting a swathe through the New Zealand acoustic music scene since returning from his studies in Milwaukee; he’s even crossed over into country to become the Golden Guitar Awards instrumental champion three times.
Al has spent more than 50 years learning about blues and the culture that created it; during that time he’s played in iconic places such as Beale St in Memphis and Junior Kimbrough’s juke joint in North Mississippi as well as at venues through NZ and Australia.
