The Friends of Hastings District Libraries are hosting a talk in the Hastings Library, featuring guest speaker Charity Norman.
Charity will be presenting 'Walking in Other People's Shoes', during which she will talk about life, laughter and storytelling. This talk will be followed by a cup of tea.
Charity Norman was born in Uganda and brought up in successive draughty vicarages in Yorkshire and Birmingham. After some years of travel she became a barrister in the Northeast of England, specialising in criminal and family law. Also a mediator, she is passionate about the power of communication to slice though knots. After fifteen years in the law, realising that her three children had barely met her, she moved with her family to New Zealand and began to write books. She is a cousin of Virginia Woolf and as a child was obsessed by the Bronte sisters, but her own writing is aimed at good old-fashioned story-telling rather than literary loftiness.
Her first novel, Freeing Grace, was published by Allen and Unwin in 2010. It was followed by Second Chances, a WH Smith book club choice in the UK, The Son-in- Law and The Secret Life of Luke Livingstone (Radio 4 Book Club choice). Her most recent novel, See You in September, was one of The Listener’s Top 100 books of 2017, a UK Reading Agency Book of the Year, and shortlisted for the Ngaio Marsh awards. Charity’s novels have been translated into French, German, Hungarian and Turkish and are available as audiobooks.
Charity is lucky enough to sing in both Napier Cathedral and Octavius choirs. She’s currently dividing her time between Wellington and Napier with husband, cats, budgie and whatever children are passing through.
