"My work has always been contemporary/abstract, as opposed to illusional art. Early heroes were painters such as Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns and the early Pop artists. I have often made 'assemblage' paintings - attaching found and industrial objects to my work. I also like to use industrial paints, metallic paints alongside the traditional 'fine-art' materials.
Like McCahon, I've always used words and symbols in my work (I like their flatness, their two- dimensionality), probably as a reflection of my own song wordsmithery. In fact, some of my later paintings have used my own lyrics as their starting- point." - Derek Lind
