Come along to this free event and learn more about how non-native dung beetles can make a big difference to water quality and soil health on your farm.
We are once again offering discounted non-native dung beetles to farmers in the Wellington region, after a successful 2018 season where close to 50 farms signed up.
These amazing creatures can tunnel and bury dung balls into the soil, meaning great benefits like:
- more available grazing pasture
- less pasture maintenance
- less run-off
- fewer parasites and pests
They're also EPA and Government approved, and have 10 years of research to support their introduction.
"I would seriously recommend other farmers to invest in dung beetles. It's a short-term cost with a long-term benefit." - Kurt Portas, Palliser Ridge farm
At this workshop we'll talk through how to ensure successful establishment of the beetles on your farm, particular management around drenches, the life cycle and a brief history of dung beetle evolution.
Speakers:
Shaun Forgie is a world leading scientist specialising in dung beetles and their application to agricultural businesses. He will tell you everything you need to know about these dung burying beetles.
Kolja Schaller works for Greater Wellington Regional Council in the land management department. He can guide you through how dung beetles could work on your land.
The day will end with a BBQ and refreshments - an opportunity to have a chat to the speakers.
