Want to create your own giant deep sea creature and partake in a winter solstice ritual procession? This year we are running a six week large format mask making workshop to allow you time enough to make something really spectacular.
Alongside experienced mask maker, Zoë Higgins, you will be guided to create your own mask based off of deep sea creatures. These masks will be part of the Lōemis Solstice Parade on June 22nd in which the festival’s giant effigy is carried through Wellington and set aflame with much fanfare. This year’s effigy has been created around ideas of ocean protection, marine life, and sustainability.
Workshops will run over six weeks on Tuesday evenings, starting on May 7. All skill levels are invited, and after the Solstice Procession you will have an amazing mask to take home. You will also be offered complimentary tickets for the festival’s after party (June 22).
What’s covered:
- Design and concept.
- Building mask frames, including large scale (1 meter plus!)
- Layering masks using paper construction techniques.
- Painting and decorating masks and building accompanying costume elements.
- Using a parade mask, including physical theatre techniques and characterisation.
What to bring:
- We provide all materials and equipment (included in ticket cost). Just bring yourself, although if you have anything out of the box you would like to include in your creation, you’re welcome to bring supplementary materials along!
