There is a Polish Prince buried in the Southern Cemetery, a huge plum tree in the back corner, a bishop, some nuns and the owner of a ship whose purpose was to capture people for the South Pacific slave trade.
In the 161 years since it was established, the Southern Cemetery has evolved into tree-lined avenues of soft grass between grand crypts, twisted iron railings and crumbling marble.
Dunedin artist Holly Aitchison spends each summer under the trees of the cemetery, drawing and painting the environment, with birds and occasional pedestrians as company. Little Paisley is a show comprised of charcoal drawings made over the summer of 2018/19, come see the work and take away a package of paper, charcoal, a map and guidelines for making your own art among the 23,000 graves. From the grand to the unmarked, find your own favourite.
