How we navigate the next decade is the biggest discussion point in governments, business and communities from the international level right down to the grassroots. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals provide a clear blueprint of action to take to kickstart this transition. The destination we want to reach is a thriving, diverse, low emissions planet for future generations. The ONE day SDG Conference concentrates on two important components of this transition. The WHY it needs to be done and HOW.
The morning session will focus on the state of the hull of our boat - our environment. This session will take a closer look at our path towards keeping emissions below +1.5 (David Tong), the importance of indigenous knowledge and science in the protection of biodiversity (Melanie Mark-Shadbolt) and the critical status of our water (Mike Joy and Shay Lawrence).
The afternoon is a series of conversations around HOW we get there. It begins with Alina Siegfried, impact storyteller, setting the scene. By 2050, general consensus is that we will need to produce 50% more electricity than we do currently to meet our needs. Al Yates will talk about how we can do this. The key role finance and capital have to play to transition to a low carbon economy will be discussed with David Woods, Barry Coates, Jennifer Belmont and Stefan Stevanovic. What we need to do to dismantle the fossil fuel motor and transition to an economy powered by renewables will then be discussed with Dr. Ann Smith, Prof. James Higham and Stephen Canny. Finally, the day ends with a discussion on the evolution of democracy, who is steering the boat, looking at participatory governance models both overseas and in New Zealand (Justine Gilliland & Alexa Forbes).
