A bitterly funny post-colonial Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf. A play that turns the cliché of the drunken dinner party between old friends inside out.
After six years apart, two couples meet up together for one extraordinary dinner party. One pair, Liz and Frank, have stayed in their hometown and built successful and illustrious careers in medicine. The other couple, Martin and Carol, have spent six ‘wonderful and horrific’ years working in an improvised medical clinic in the developing world. After their country collapsed, they were forced to flee and return home, abandoning something far more precious than just their possessions.
A tasting menu of relationships on the precipice, Peggy Pickit examines colonialist attitudes and challenges our own ‘saviour’ mentality as the meal goes on. Unsettling, and almost desperate at times, this play is a deep delve into marriage and all of its challenges, both the good and the bad.
With whip-smart dialogue, bittersweet humour, impossible choices and two dolls, Peggy Pickit steps well beyond the conventional dinner party play to examine the characters’ feelings and lives from multiple angles, and will keep you thinking long after it finishes.
Directed by Giles Burton (The Ugly One, The Man Who Was Thursday), set design from the amazing Debbie Fish (Burn Her), and featuring a fantastic cast of Patrick Davies (Scarlett and Gold, A Servant of Two Masters), Rebecca Parker, Fingal Pollock (Femme Natale) and Gavin Rutherford (Daffodils, Top of the Lake) catch Peggy Pickit Sees the Face of God from September 12th at Circa Two.
