Emerging from the creative brilliance of choreographer Ross McCormack, The Clearing is a full-length work performed by renowned national dance company, Footnote New Zealand Dance. Taking inspiration from the impact of our carved out spaces, both natural and designed, The Clearing is set within an otherworldly terrain where a faint echo of reality exists. Alluring and perplexing, The Clearing reverberates with a mysterious energy that stirs its occupants to test themselves against the environment and against each other.

Ross McCormack is one of New Zealand’s leading next generation performance makers. His extensive career includes ten years performing with the acclaimed Belgian company Les Ballets C de la B. Throughout this time Ross maintained connections to New Zealand and Australia, choreographing and designing multiple works for companies in both countries and performing internationally with Chunky Move and Lucy Guerin. He is also co-founder and Artistic Director of dance theatre company Muscle Mouth. Ross is a recipient of the prestigious Creative New Zealand Choreographic Fellowship, and a 2017 NZ Arts Foundation Laureate.

As New Zealand’s longest running contemporary dance company, Footnote has been at the forefront of contemporary dance in New Zealand for over 30 years. Continually pushing the boundaries of the artform through commissioned works by New Zealand’s most interesting choreographers, Footnote delivers high quality and accessible dance works that delight and challenge audiences across New Zealand. Footnote’s five full-time dancers are highly experienced performers at the top of their game.
