Battle Rap entertainment goes international.

The phenomenon which is battle rap - quickfire, three round a-capella battles of wits and words delivered in rhyme - is enjoying a Kiwi renaissance thanks to the efforts of Auckland based battle league 1OutsNZ. With a roster of top local MCs ready to challenge both other Kiwis, trans-Tasman rivals and some super-heavyweight contenders from the USA, the next event premiered by this competitive entertainment powerhouse is set to redefine the sport and potentially take it from the underground to the heights of public perception.

Topping the card for Face The Hate 5 (the fifth iteration of a popular format fought out between uncensored, incisive, and always scathingly funny battle rappers) is well known Boston personality and veteran of the battle scene Chilla Jones, who will face off against south Auckland's 'major threat' PFAK, a man who has enjoyed a meteoric rise through the ranks of our home-grown talent to stand up for Kiwi honour.

While this alone would be a feather in the cap for the 1OutsNZ league (who have been slowly growing the competitive rhyme sport in the NZ underground for many years, and who were last year feature on TV's 1 news), it's the quality of the rest of the undercard which has local fans ready to bust down the doors on March 28th. A glance at this roster reveals some of the top names in Kiwi battle rap, as well as battlers from as far away as Australia and Texas. It's this depth of talent, carefully nurtured and supported over years of events, which defined the preeminence of 1OutsNZ as the top league in the business.

Fans of hip hop culture will recognize battle rap as one of the cornerstones of the musical movement, and will certainly want to witness the state of the art. Those who enjoy live performance art in all its forms will be equally entertained by this combination of poetry, ribald humour, off-the-cuff creativity and uncensored wordplay.

Kiwi battle rap has come of age as a sport and as a form of competitive self expression with this event, which may well be regarded as a defining moment in years to come. It all happens at Velvet on Cross, a licensed venue just off the intersection of Queen St and K Road, barely a month from now. Tickets are available online; look for 1OutsNZ and come and enjoy a full late afternoon and evening of world class entertainment, brought to you by some of the finest minds in hip hop.
