Celebrate Orpheus Choir Wellington’s glorious return with two settings of Gloria composed 250 years apart alongside music to welcome the season from two perspectives; the dark, cold northern hemisphere, and the flowering warmth of our southern hemisphere.
Vivaldi’s Gloria (RV 589) is his most well-known sacred work with rich contrasts of moods from a bombastic awakening propelling the music forward, to movements of solemn, smudged chromatic shadows. Poulenc’s Gloria resembles no other work of sacred music. With jaunty sections containing off-kilter rhythms, to haunting and ethereal soprano solos, this work is unashamedly entertaining. Poulenc’s refreshing, and at times irreverent approach, reminded himself of a fresco by Bozzoli, in which angels stick their tongues out at one another.
We finish the evening with seasonal flavour featuring Esenvalds’ Stars, accompanied by tuned wine glasses pitched in tonal clusters, painting the picture of a sparkling, starry night sky. Also, encounter the bleak midwinter of the north, and the carefree joy that spring brings in the south with the choir not only placed in front but for some arrangements, around the audience for a hypnotic surround-sound effect.
Indulge in this stunning programme under the direction of Brent Stewart. The concert will showcase soprano Barbara Paterson, mezzo Ruth Armishaw, an instrumental ensemble, and of course the palpable, epic-sized Orpheus Choir Wellington.
