A prodigal son kiwi bassist presents a set of new large ensemble compositions: a jazz festival special brought to you by the Arthur Street Loft Orchestra concert series.

Recently-returned-from-Sydney composer and double bassist Tom Botting returns to The Third
Eye with a stellar band of local and visiting musicians to present a collection of his compositions
for large ensemble in association with the Arthur Street Loft Orchestra series. Tom has been
making regular trips to his spiritual home of Wellington over the last few years to perform with
some of his favourite players and ruddy good mates. Last year saw him open the 2019 ASLO
series with 2 sets of music for quintet and large ensemble as well as presenting a double bill
with long-time collaborator and fellow brewing enthusiast Callum Allardice as part of the
Wellington Jazz Festival. Tom’s music bursts with melodic sensibility and rhythmic propulsion,
coupled with a knack for creating frameworks for expressive individual and group creativity.
Born out of a constant search for the ideal of home, this is music that the listener will both
resonate with and find meaning in.

Since relocating from Auckland to Sydney in late 2011, Tom has become a stalwart of the
Australian jazz scene. His impressive abilities as a sideman have led to playing opportunities
with jazz luminaries as diverse as Roger Manins, James Muller, and Walter Smith III. Tom placed
third in the 2015 National Jazz Awards at Wangaratta Jazz Festival and graduated with a PhD
from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 2019.
