Baroque music concert performed by Southern Baroque Ensemble, professional period-instrument specialists from New Zealand and abroad. This year we will be featuring world renowned harpsichord soloist, Edita Keglerova from the Czech Republic. The ensemble will be performing works by Handel, Corelli, Sammartini, Telemann, Vivaldi and included in the repertoire with be Bach's Harpsichord Concerto.

Baroque music is a form of classical music from 17th century Europe. It is a time in musical history when melody accompanied by expressive harmony was developed; the form of music that is so common in modern times. This period produced rich and beautiful musical works by composers such as Bach, Vivaldi and Handel. Authentic interpretation of Baroque music on period instruments is unique in that instead of using steel strings as we do today, traditional gut strings are used which produce a more direct clear sound, but need the acoustical amplification of the venue; cathedrals and churches usually being ideal. Also the tuning was lower, which put less stress on the instrument itself and thus the sound coming from the instrument is more soothing to the human nervous system.
