Godspell is an amazing show, and this year you can experience it in a truly amazing venue - the wonderful Waiapu Cathedral in Napier. There will be three performances of this popular rock musical on May 29th, 30th and 31st. One of the most successful musicals in history, Godspell has been constantly performed worldwide for almost 50 years.

The show is based on Biblical parables and the last seven days of Christ’s life as described in the Gospel according to St. Matthew. These parables and events are retold in song, mime, and comedy using modern language and imagery to make the show accessible and understandable to today's audiences. Well-known songs in the show include Prepare Ye, Save the People, and Day by Day.

The cast for Godspell requires eight actors playing non-Biblical characters, plus two actors who play Jesus Christ and the dual role of John the Baptist/Judas. We are proud to announce that the group of actors chosen includes several names which will be very familiar to local theatre fans due to their wide-ranging stage experience in other Hawke's Bay shows.

They are Ross Corbett, Lisa Eagle, John Graham, Rachael Griffiths, Laura Jeffares, Olivia Karlsonn, Reiss Jenkinson and Carol Williams. And two actors new to the local theatre scene will make their acting debuts in Godspell – Roger Parr and Aaron Percival, are very excited to have roles in this famous musical.

The on-stage band, led by well-known drummer David O’Hanlon, is also made up of talented local artists - Greg Conrad (Bass Guitar), Justin Lindsay (Guitar), David O’Hanlon (Musical Director, Percussion), Cameron Budge (Drums), Wendy Hunt (Keyboard) and Matiu Whiting, also playing Guitar.

The show Director, Kerry Tattersall, is a classically trained soprano with years of acting and singing experience. She made her debut as an actor playing Jack in “Jack and the Beanstalk” in the UK in 1998 and has directed, acted and sung in many pantomimes, plays and musicals since then. Kerry moved with her husband and family to New Zealand in 2013. She sings in the Napier choir Octavius and in the Waiapu Cathedral Choir. Directing Godspell will be very significant for Kerry as, almost 20 years ago to the day, she played Sonya in this show, bringing the house down with her sassy rendition of Turn Back O Man!
