Sharp, crisp & “real”. Modern cameras are good at giving you sharp, crisp, well-exposed, photos. “Real photos”.

But do we want “sharp, crisp & real” every time we pick up our camera? Much of the time, yes, but most of us have a restless artist inside us, an inner voice that often asks “Is that all there is? What about something creative, something different, something artistic and compelling?”

Black and white photography is one very good answer to those requests from your inner artist. Another good answer is long exposure photography that blurs moving water or clouds or people or wildlife. Better still is both together.

Silky, slow, smooth, wonderful. Once you’ve learned these techniques, you can turn your local beach, river, waterfall or moving clouds into artworks. Long exposures create magic out of what is often “nothing much”, photographically speaking. Many days at the beach the waves don’t offer much to the discerning photographer. Days like that are perfect for long exposure photos which turn scruffy, choppy seas [or cloudy days] into satisfying art.

Easy? Yes, the basic techniques are easy, or at least not hard.

Do you need any special equipment? No, not for most of the techniques. I’ll show you how to get good long exposure photos with just your normal camera [and a tripod, usually], nothing else needed. One advanced technique [still not too hard] needs a strong neutral density filter [8-12 stops] and ideally a shutter release cable. But don’t worry if you don’t have a strong neutral density filter – I have three that I’m happy to lend you for the afternoon. First in, first served.

This workshop includes an assignment and follow-up evening 2-3 weeks later [at a time that suits everyone]. The follow-up can be by email.

Cost: Full course fee [which includes tuition, hand-outs, yummy catering, assignment, and follow-up] $295. Fulltime students with ID $145.
