A public talk by music photographer Charles Brooks

Charles Brooks is an exceptional photographic talent. His portraits are coveted by the greatest artists to grace the stage, and by those who have the aspiration to get there. Charles is a formidable musician himself. For the last 20 years he's been New Zealand’s most successful orchestral cellist. Charles held principal positions internationally and it’s that same ambitions that now drives him in the visual arts.

In this presentation, Charles will share his journey from performing-musician to musician-photographer and how his insight into the drama of the music leads to creating unique and engaging portraits. He’ll share the special effects he uses to create his photography seen particularly in his work with classical musicians.

The talk is FREE of charge however registration is required for seating purposes.

From the Pit Exhibition
20 May - 30 May,
Monster Valley, 74 K'rd, Auckland.

First held in 2019, FromThePit is an annual curated exhibition of images of New Zealand musicians playing live in New Zealand. More than anything it is a celebration of the craft and art of live music photography.

Each week dozens of photographers are huddled in to music venues up and down the country capturing photos of New Zealand’s vibrant music scene. It’s a difficult and unpredictable environment to work in, but these photographers work tirelessly to capture the magic they see before them.

Part artists, part historians, but all music fans, they all strive to take the perfect photo which reflects how it felt to be at the concert and communicates the excitement of a live music event.

The print exhibition is displayed as part of New Zealand Music Month. An extended remix of the print exhibition with bonus additional content is also available as an audio visual version.
