Cellists from over Aotearoa New Zealand will join Cellists of Otago for a cello retreat and mass cello concert in August. The ‘Cello Extravaganza’ concert on 22 August will be the largest ever cello ensemble performance in the Dunedin Town Hall with cello ensembles varying from 16 to 70 players on stage directed by Heleen du Plessis.

The celebrated Dunedin-based cello ensemble will be joined by the well-known, award-winning New Zealand soprano, Rebecca Ryan. The performance will be extended in some works for mass cello ensemble by players from Dunedin and the region. These players from all ages and levels from beginner to very advanced, including invited cellists from the rest of New Zealand will be conducted by Peter Adams.

The programme includes well-known and -loved repertoire such as Villa-Lobos’ magnificent Bachianas Brasileiras no. 5. and Klengel’s Hymnus for 12 celli. Known for their innovative programming of great variety, Cellists of Otago will not disappoint, performing newly arranged works by Peter Adams and Keith Moss especially arranged for this spectacular occasion.

Don’t miss this once in a long-time opportunity to experience cello playing in excess, excellence, and extravagance!

Cellists of Otago thanks the School of Performing Arts, University of Otago and the Dunedin City Council for their support in this project.
