Steam train excursion from Gisborne to Muriwai and return. The excursion includes a 30 minutes picnic/photo break at Muriwai where there is a grass area with plenty of room for a picnic etc. So bring along your goodies - hot water is available in the Buffet carriage.

The excursion travels across the longest railway bridge in the North Island and is the only train in the world to cross the main runway of a fully operational airport. It has been known for Air New Zealand aircraft to wait on the runway for the train to cross ahead of the aircraft - great viewing for both aircraft and train passengers! (Check out the photo of AirNZ Flight NZ8161 on 26th April 2021.)

You can choose to travel in an authentic 1936 passenger carriage with flip-over "reverse the direction of travel" seating or in one of the GCVR purpose-built (heat-pump) air-conditioned passenger carriages complete with viewing platforms.

Tickets can be purchased from the i-Site Gisborne Information Centre in Grey Street. Please note that half an hour before the designated departure, any remaining tickets are sold at the Gisborne Railway Station ticket office where we have EFTPOS, which also is available on the Train.

COVID INFORMATION.
--------------------------------
Please note that we are only able to operate excursions to Muriwai when Gisborne is at Covid Level 1 or 2. If you book an excursion which has to be cancelled due to Gisborne being at a different Covid level, you will have the choice of receiving a FULL refund or transferring your booking to a different excursion.

When we are operating at Covid Level 2, extra precautions will be in place for your safety. All of our crew will be fully vaccinated and face coverings will be required (unless you are exempt) at the Railway Station and on board the train. Social distancing will be maintained where practicable and everybody will be required to scan or sign-in before entering your carriage.

Further information is available at the Gisborne City Vintage Railway website.

Feel free to visit the workshops on Thursday and Saturday mornings - open from 9am to noon (access from Awapuni Road).

Sorry, but GCVR reserves the right to use a veteran diesel engine instead of the steam engine for operational reasons at any time.
