The Science Beneath Our Feet brings Alpine Fault science and hazard impact information to South Island communities, in areas most likely to be affected by an AF8 earthquake.

While we can’t predict when earthquakes will occur, scientific research has shown that the Alpine Fault has a history of generating regular, large earthquakes. The next event is likely to occur within the lifetime of most of us, or our children and young people, for whom this is likely to have major short and long-term impacts.

Join us at the Corinthian Centre at the Invercargill Workingmen’s Club on Monday 24th May, 7pm for a public talk by leading Alpine Fault scientists, A Prof. Caroline Orchiston (University of Otago) and Prof. Mark Stirling (University of Otago) and hear about what the impact of an AF8 event might look like in your region.

Please Note: The AF8 Roadshow Public Science Talks will only go ahead at Alert level 1. At Alert level 2-4, presentations will be moved online and links will be available via the AF8 website and shared to this event page.

The AF8 Roadshow is supported by the six South Island CDEM Groups, Earthquake Commission - EQC, Resilience to Nature's Challenges, QuakeCoRE: NZ Centre for Earthquake Resilience, GNS Science, University of Otago, University of Canterbury and The University of Auckland.
