Leonard Bernstein – MASS

James Harrison – baritone
CSO Chorus
Ravil Atlas – Chorus Director
Benjamin Northey – Chief Conductor

Leonard Bernstein’s MASS was inspired by the Catholic Mass and commissioned for the inauguration of the Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.

Utilising both sacred and secular texts this musical tour de force embraces a wide range of musical influences including blues, rock, gospel, folk, Broadway and jazz idioms appearing side by side with 12-tone serialism, symphonic marches, solemn hymns, Middle Eastern dances, orchestral meditations, and lush chorales, all united in a musical pageant that embodies a message of hope for universal peace.

Joining the CSO to perform the solo role of The Celebrant, James Harrison has performed throughout Europe, the UK and New Zealand including appearances with English National Opera, London Mozart Players, Opera North and NZ Opera.

There is no interval for this performance.
