Wellington Botanic Garden is home to thousands of fascinating plants. This talk will give a brief snapshot of the evolution of land plants from bryophytes through to angiosperms. It will then embark on a ‘virtual tour’ from the upper to the lower reaches of the Garden, have a quirky look at scientific names plants have been given, and introduce the presenter’s personal sliding scale for the degree of the helpfulness of these names. It will also consider important medicinal applications based on well-known plant species in the Garden.
