Free tour of Mona Vale Homestead and grounds with architectural historian Jenny May. Get up close to one of the few remaining grand old houses of this style in Christchurch. Join architectural historian Jenny May for a walk through the homestead and grounds to enjoy a look into how the other half lived at the turn of the century while learning about Mona Vale’s architectural, social and historical importance. Designed by Joseph Clarkson Maddison, the building showcases components of the Old English Revival style and the materials and techniques favoured at the end of the Victorian/beginning of the Edwardian period.
Jenny May is an architectural historian and heritage consultant who has been involved in heritage for some 30 years. She is currently involved in a number of projects including the reinstatement of Christ Church Cathedral and the Arts Centre of Christchurch. She received the ONZM in the 2007 New Year’s Honours for her work in heritage.
Meet at the main entrance to the homestead under the portico. Join Open Christchurch on 15 & 16 May. With 46 open buildings, two guided central city walks and dozens of special activities (from children’s workshops to performance as well as expert talks and tours), Open Christchurch 2021 is a celebration of our architecture.
