The Hikurangi subduction zone is New Zealand's largest and most active fault, stretching offshore Gisborne down to the top of the South Island. Recent science suggests the likelihood of a Hikurangi fault rupture may be higher than initially understood.

We now know a Hikurangi subduction zone earthquake and tsunami could unfold in many ways and the reality is, it's not a matter of if, but when.

While we can’t predict when earthquakes will occur, scientific research has shown that the Hikurangi subduction zone has a history of generating large earthquakes and tsunami.
