Contra Collective presents, through contemporary dance, an examination of the far-reaching effects of the coronavirus pandemic and how it has influenced our society.
We wish to present a perspective unique to Aotearoa, sharing our own personal stories, and those of our whanau and the communities we belong to.
We were forced as a nation, along with the rest of the world, to disrupt our normalities and conduct our daily lives in isolation from one another, to work together for our shared wellbeing while completely separated. The Covid-19 pandemic has brought to the forefront of our collective consciousness the existing inequalities and injustices in society, sparking frustration, protest, and the spread of misinformation.
Viral Disruption highlights how this disease has so quickly had a profound effect on our society and our social relationships. We explore how people swiftly adapted to a new ‘normal’ and stayed connected to one another despite being physically and socially isolated. Much like the way this terrible virus mutates and spreads rapidly, we seek to understand how it also infects and permeates our social, personal, virtual, and political worlds. This work contains themes of loss and grief, disruption, and restriction which are used to influence the choreographic process.
A nation united in mass solitude. A collective fall and recovery, a simultaneous breaking apart and coming together. This is Viral Disruption.
