Active Whakapapa - Henderson Park Community Date

Dates

  • Sat 18 Jun 2022, 11:30am–1:00pm

Restrictions

R10

Active Whakapapa looks to engage and connect our whole community to the history and pūrākau of the many significant sites around the Waitākere region. The connection Māori have to the whenua (land) and Taiao (environment) is expressed in Active Whakapapa through the sharing of Iwi stories, narratives and history. Active Whakapapa informs us of traditional place names, and encourages not only correct pronunciation but to also understand the deeper meaning behind each name.

Active Whakapapa contributes to more Te Reo Māori being spoken, heard, and seen in our parks and green spaces through its bilingual and fully emersed delivery. There is currently a lack of community activities that preference Te Reo Maōri and in turn results in out Kura kaupapa, Marae and Kohanga missing out, or having to participate in something that doesn't allow for true authentic participation. Active whakapapa has been developed with Kura kaupapa , Marae , and Kōhanga in mind, and provides a option that is fully emersed in Te Reo Māori and Te Ao Māori.

This is a walking event using headset technology (you can choose either Te Reo Māori or English language settings depending on your preference) and Kaiarahi (host-guides) will navigate you around the West Auckland Park as the narrative is being heard by you as you walk. Basic walking fitness is required and please come prepared and dressed for an 'all weather' event. Suitable footwear for walking, a water bottle are warmly encouraged and if you prefer to wear a mask that is entirely at your own discretion. We ask that all participants arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start time to allow for the distribution of headsets and the health & safety briefing.

Active Whakapapa is supported by the Local Activation Fund Programme, administered by Tataki Auckland Unlimited on behalf of the New Zealand Government.
