Monique Lapins, second violinist with the New Zealand String Quartet, is joined by marimba player Naoto Segawa for an afternoon of contemporary music. The dynamic duo have carefully crafted an engaging programme that will take audiences on a journey across the globe. Their extensive violin and marimba repertoire will include works by South African Peter Klatzow, Dutch avant-garde composer JacobTV, and New Zealand’s own Linda Dallimore. As recipient of the inaugural CMNZ Commissioning Prize, Linda has composed a luminous piece entitled Matariki, with a movement dedicated to each one of the stars of the Pleiades star cluster.

Monique Lapins is a member of the New Zealand String Quartet and Lecturer at the New Zealand School of Music—Te Kōkī, Victoria University of Wellington. She enjoys diverse collaborations as a chamber musician, soloist and orchestral player and has toured extensively both nationally and internationally. Monique is a recording artist with Naxos and Rattle Labels and performs on a 1784 Lorenzo Storioni violin kindly loaned by David Duncan Craig on behalf of the Lily Duncan Trust.
Naoto Segawa is a dedicated contemporary percussionist who specialises in marimba performance. He has won numerous awards in competitions including the 14th KOBE International Music Competition, 6th Romania International Music Competition and JILA Music Competition. Naoto actively seeks to perform the works of up-and-coming composers, premiering many new compositions, including pieces by Joshua Pangilinan, David Taylor, Tsu-Chin Hsu, Kongmeng Liew, and Simon Eastwood. His teachers include Yoshiko Kanda, Sumire Yoshihara, Jonathan Fox, and Kunihiko Komori.
