On the second of a three-day festival of superlative music-making, violin virtuoso Hilary Hahn performs what some consider one of the four great German violin concerti – Brahms' Violin Concerto in D major. Written for the legendary nineteenth-century violinist Joseph Joachim, Brahms' concerto was deeply indebted to and influenced by Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, right down to the key and the prominent timpani. Hahn’s “stunning balance of the explosive and expressive” (Washington Post) will breathe new life into this venerable masterwork of the violin repertoire.
From one great American musician to another; from Hilary Hahn to John Adams, and his Doctor Atomic Symphony. Adams made his name (and won a Pulitzer) for writing great works inspired by twentieth-century history. His opera Doctor Atomic follows J. Robert Oppenheimer, the deeply conflicted scientist who led the development and testing of the first atomic bomb in 1945. For his Symphony, Adams selected music from his opera to create a stand-alone work for orchestra, capturing the barren New Mexico setting, the terrible wonder of the bomb, and the wrenching inner turmoil of Oppenheimer himself.
International superstar Hilary Hahn performs three exceptional violin works over three days. The other two concerts are: Truth and Beauty on Thu 04 Aug and Love Triumphant on 07 Aug.
