Jonathan was born and educated in Dunedin, studying voice with Dr Raymond White and Honor McKellar. He graduated in 1999 with a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Otago before vocal studies with Vera Rosza at London’s Royal College of Music. In 2002 he graduated with the college’s top honours, the Tagore Gold Medal and Queen Elizabeth Rosebowl, presented by King Charles III and Sir Willard White. He has given solo recitals in New Zealand, Berlin, Salzburg, Amsterdam, Munich, Rome, Brussels, Vienna, Montreal, Vancouver, San Francisco, Washington DC and Sydney as well as London’s Wigmore Hall and New York’s Carnegie Hall.

His debut recording with Roger Vignoles (EMI) won Gramophone Magazine Debut Artist of the Year, Royal Philharmonic Society Debut Artist of the Year and ECHO Classiks Debut Disc of the Year. Subsequent recordings include English/American song (Malcolm Martineau/Belcea Quartet), Opera Arias (NZSO), Richard Rodney Bennet’s Songs before Sleep (Hickox), contributions to the complete songs of Schumann (Graham Johnson), Wolf (Sholto Kynoch), Poulenc (Malcolm Martineau) as well as operas by Britten, Handel, Mozart, Holst, Weir, Wagner and Gershwin.

Jonathan is a Professor of Voice at London’s Guildhall School of Music & Drama and also teaches at the Royal College of Music and National Opera Studio. He was recently awarded an Honorary RCM Fellowship by King Charles III, and was made an ONZM for services to music in the late Queen’s Birthday Honours. Jonathan is also an Ambassador for the Dunedin Arts Festival, and a Patron of Virtuoso Strings Orchestra and New Zealand Opera.
