In this printmaking class, you will learn how to make an etching using an everyday packaging material; the Tetra Pak.
Bring along a photo or picture of your favourite animal or pet, best friend or family member that you would like to draw and make an etching from. If you would rather draw a superhero or character from a game, that’s fine too! Lisa from Ink Moth Print Studio will be on hand to carefully guide you to get the best results, while having some creative fun at the same time.
Tetra Pak cartons come in different sizes and are used to keep food fresh (substitute milks, juice boxes, ‘Up and Go’ etc). Unfortunately, it is currently very hard to recycle tetra paks in New Zealand. However, they have a thin foil lining inside that makes them ideal for making etchings with! It’s a good way to make use of a throwaway material that would normally end up in the landfill.
Etching are prints on paper made from a rectangular ‘plate’ that is prepared making marks and scratches and covered with ink. This is put through an etching press to pick up all the marks that have been made on the plate, printing it on paper. It’s magic!
Don’t forget to wear old clothes, you’re going to get inky!
Donations of empty tetra paks at the class are welcomed. Please rinse them out first and flatten them to hand to the teacher.
