SECTION C - 'Reign'
------------------------------------------------
Presented by our Academy students, Reign brings all the love, sorrow, scandal and revenge of an early England and her Queen. With a stunning variety of contemporary dance choreography accompanied by a powerful cinematic soundtrack, this section will drive through and move you.

Set in the old English kingdom during the 1500s, at a time of fierce battles and great rulers – a young princess named Catherine falls in love with a common boy named Ranulf. She soon discovers she is with child and gives birth in secret to a baby girl they name Edythe. Aware that her family will disapprove, Catherine leaves Edythe in the care of a group of nuns at a convent in a neighboring town.

Her father (King Edward) soon discovers their secret and discreetly orders Ranulf away from the kingdom. Catherine, wanting to keep her daughter safe, accepts Ranulf’s banishment and denies any relationship with him.

Five years later, the young princess loses both her parents in a tragic battle and she is forced to an early crown. She must now choose a suitor, one of royal bloodline who will reign by her side as the new King. The young Prince Richard of Nottingham wins her hand and they wed.

Meanwhile, far away, Ranulf is now much older and his heart has darkened with anger. He plots his revenge on the kingdom and his ex-lover and plans to take back the throne and the crown for himself.

He stages an attack on Catherine while she is visiting the grave of her parents and the bandits lock her in an old woodshed deep in the forest. A now grown Edythe hears of her mother’s disappearance and goes in search of her, eventually rescuing her from the woods.

A mysterious woman in scarlet red named Astoria then appears to Ranulf, offering to help him take the crown and assist him on his quest. She wants to rule as Queen beside him and has the power of sight and magic.

Together they attack the kingdom and attempt to steal the crown. The battle is brutal, King Richard and many others are injured and just as Ranulf attempts to kill the Queen their daughter Edythe runs between them to stop the bloodshed.

The pure heart and love of his only daughter in this moment melts his black heart and he accepts his fate and asks for forgiveness. He is sentenced to death and the rightful Queen Catherine rules on with her daughter by her side, her one true north.
