Moriori elder, Wai-O-Rongo (Denise) Davis, offers a glimpse of her neurodiverse world, using positive aspects of today’s technology as tools, to create artistically poetic shapes that embrace, mock, warn, and gently challenge aspects of our modern lives. In a genre she has defined as, ‘Wd-PoArtry,’ (poetry in text-formatted visual art) ‘painting’ with words, Wai-O-Rongo plays with rhythm, rap, free verse, and rhyme to form black on white images in eco-friendly prints.
The ‘Wd’ in the title, may be seen as shorthand for ‘word processing,’ as well as part of her name. All the works on display have emerged from a ‘diversity themed’ book of poetry, currently being finalised. It will feature her poems in various forms, including haiku, senryu, and ‘PoArtry.’ The digitally produced works in the exhibition also acknowledge the art of the font-maker in typefaces downloaded from the internet, free for personal and commercial use.
