Why Cinderella? Do we really know this children’s fairy tale? Is the handsome Prince Charming as one-dimensional as he seems? Is the evil stepmother actually evil? Why does Cinderella’s father let them treat her so poorly? Why is this young girl plucked from obscurity to become a princess? A fairy, really? With an up-to-the-minute translation from Georgia Jamieson Emms, in this seldom-heard version of "Cendrillon", Jules Massenet delves deeper into these characters to find their truth and motivations.

Our heroine Lucy, nicknamed Cinderella as she sleeps by the fire will be played by Jasmine Jessen and Emily Yeap. Her father Pandolfe, finding his courage, will be played by Tomairangi Henare and Patrick Shanahan. Prince Charming, a “pants role” played by Kate Manahi and Alex Buchanan, struggles with a predetermined future. With magical vocal fireworks, Emily-Jane Stockman and Anastasia Reid will play the Fairy Godmother. She is supported by a wonderful cast of Stepsisters, Stepmothers, Kings, Jesters, townsfolk, and a small battalion of fairies!

This is the first opportunity to hear this beautiful opera on our shores. Supported by the NZSM Orchestra under the baton of Martin Riseley.  And best of all, it’s double-cast, so you’ll have to see it twice!
