Exploring dramatic shifts and colour contrasts, this programme celebrates the lyricism of Schubert and Schumann with two cornerstones of chamber music repertoire. Using patterns of the dark and powerful contrasted with Schubert’s natural instinct for melody and song, ‘Death and the Maiden’ is a masterwork among string quartets.
This work is paired with Schumann’s delightful, exuberant, and quintessentially romantic Piano Quintet which is widely considered as one of Schumann’s finest compositions and a major work of nineteenth-century chamber music.

Chinese New Zealander Tony Chen Lin returns from Hungary to join Belgium-based string ensemble Sonoro and Aotearoa’s Liu-Yi Retallick as first violin.
