This boutique classical music festival brings together some of New Zealand's foremost professional musicians in three one-hour concerts over the course of a single weekend. Friday evening opens with the only Central Auckland concert of the recently formed Ākarana Piano Quartet’s debut national tour, in a programme ranging from Turina and Janet Jennings to Robert Schumann. The Ākarana players are Andrew Beer (violin), Robert Ashworth (viola), Chen Cao (cello) and Sarah Watkins (piano). On Saturday, internationally respected pianist Katherine Austin accompanies opera star Edward Laurenson (baritone) in a Liederabend of works by Finzi, Strauss, Robert and Clara Schumann, Britten and Vaughan Williams. For the Sunday matinee we welcome four NZSO players - festival artistic director Simeon Broom (violin), Jessica Oddie (violin), Alex McFarlane (viola) and Ken Ichinose (cello) - playing Golijov and Schubert.
