Opera North proudly showcases a selection of known and perhaps not so well-known songs based around the timeless theme of “Good and Evil”. From the scores of classic operatic and musical theatre traditions, to the sing-a-long blockbuster movie themes you may recognise from the grandchildren’s favourite movies, we hope you enjoy the programme as much as we have enjoyed bringing it to you.

Musical Director, Emma Couper is supported by Vera Pluijlaar as they lead the Opera North chorus, ensemble and soloists, superbly accompanied by musical maestro, Roger McClean who will be playing Forum North’s brand-new Steinway grand piano.

Our featured guest artists - Whangārei’s own Rhiannon Cooper, soprano and Scott Bezett, tenor are both rising stars and will no doubt entertain and impress. After much recent national recognition, both these fine singers’ careers should definitely be followed.

The opening half of the programme - heavy, dark and haunting contains operatic chorus contrasted against much lighter moments. From the drama of Verdi’s “Macbeth” to the highly energetic, popular and frivolous “Can Can”. The theme continues in the second half, albeit less intensely, with some well-known and loved musical theatre selections - some that have never been performed in Whangārei.

After the success of recent productions, Opera North is again very happy to broaden the scope of creative endeavour presented to Whangārei audiences by the inclusion of movement under the talented direction of Kaneisha Mckenzie with her dancers. The whole performance is further enhanced by Tim Bell’s technical wizardry and, of course, where would an Opera North production be without the lifetime of contribution and knowledge that Lachie McLean adds to this production and our entire performing arts creative community. From all of us, to all of you - we hope you enjoy the show!
