Three members of the well-known Aroha String Quartet will present a concert of delightful string trios titled "Serenade" . The Serenade as a musical form was originally intended for light evening entertainment. In the 18th century it developed into a short instrumental suite and was adopted by many composers including Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert. Beethoven's Opus 8 Serenade is the most substantial work on the programme. It has a wealth of melodic inspiration and an almost orchestral palette filled with sonority and colour. It will be followed by a spirited trio from Frenchman Jean Francaix (who once famously said "My music exists to give pleasure"). Violinist Haihong Liu, violist Zhongxian Jin and cellist Robert Ibell will delight with Schubert's well-known miniature gem for string trio, followed by Mata-Au by New Zealander Salina Fisher, a piece that takes its inspiration from the Clutha River. A richly romantic Serenade by Hungarian composer Dohnanyi will complete this beautiful programme in style.
