Sione Tuìvailala Monū: Stories features a programme of screenings by international artists which extends the exhibition’s ideas about identity and story-telling in the digital age.
Martine Syms (USA) combines video and performance to examine representations of blackness in contemporary America. Syms’s narratives interrogate imposed identities, the power of the gesture, and embedded assumptions concerning gender and racial inequalities.
Join us for a screening of three of Syms’s films: Pilot For A Show About Nowhere (2015) a sitcom pilot which examines the politics of television viewership; She Mad: Laughing Gas (2016) which follows the central character on a journey home from the dentist; and She Mad: Bitch Zone (2020) which follows Martine, a graphic designer who wishes she were an important artist.
This screening will be introduced by the curator Tendai John Mutambu.
