Linocut Printmaking is a method of relief printing.

This print method is where you draw and carve onto lino or a lino type product, roll a thin layer of ink onto this block and then press paper on top to transfer the image. The areas carved away exemplify beautiful clear results. The wonderful thing about lino printmaking is you get to make many prints from one carved block.

You can spend a long-time carving in detail but often the most impacting prints come from the simplest designs. Simple designs are what we will focus on in this workshop. Some artists love the confident powerful quality printing holds with sharp clear lines.

In this workshop, beginners will use a soft A5-sized block to carve. These can be carved on both sides making them an economical alternative to hard lino blocks. We want beginners to have success with their first experience in printmaking. Soft carving blocks make a great introduction to linocut printmaking as the blocks are smooth, hold fine lines, and carve like butter. You will find the whole process very satisfying, and you will gain great results. You will take home many prints from the day and the block you carve so you can continue your printmaking journey at home.

If you are an experienced printmaker, please join us too. If you have carved lino blocks before then bring another along to carve. You can also carve a soft block provided and enjoy the simplicity of hand roller pressing your prints. We have a manual printing press available to use during the workshop if you are familiar with this process.

We will use water-based inks in this workshop.

Siobhan teaches term-time courses after school at UXBRIDGE. Making Pictures on Mondays and Drawing and Painting on Wednesdays. She also teaches art students during the day at Macleans college. She has illustrated children’s books and is passionate about all things creative. Siobhan loves the linocut printmaking process.

WHAT TO BRING?
Please bring 2 or 3 simple images on your phone that you might like to carve. If you are a beginner and your images are suitable, Siobhan will guide you through the carving and printing process. If your images are too detailed then Siobhan may suggest using one of many designs she will have on hand.
