New Zealand's most acclaimed pianist Michael Houstoun returns to Waikanae to perform a stunning recital of music by Bach, Liszt, Gao Ping and Chopin.
He will open his concert with J S Bach's majestic Fantasy and Fugue in G minor, composed for organ, but in this case transcribed for piano by Franz Liszt. Although Liszt frequently embellished the works he transcribed, in this case he has faithfully maintained the rich drama and intricate contrapuntal writing of Bach's magnificent masterpiece.
More music by Liszt follows, showing two vastly different facets of his character - the flamboyance of the Concert Etudes and then the serene contemplation of the Bénédiction de Dieu dans la Solitude. The concert then continues with a suite of little pieces "Outside the Window" by Chinese/New Zealand composer Gao Ping, followed by the major work on the programme - Chopin's B minor Sonata, a masterpiece that is considered by many to be the culmination of Chopin's genius.
