Roger Wilson returns to the Globe stage after his significant performance a couple of years ago of Schubert’s great Song Cycle ‘A Winter’s Journey” completely from memory. He will again accompanied by local pianist Guy Donaldson.

Roger and Guy have chosen to celebrate their accession to seniority in years with a whimsical approach to senior years in the world of music.
In some cases it will be a case of reflections on a good life, such as in the iconic Sings Harry song cycle of Douglas Lilburn, or in songs by Brahms and Schubert. In Ravel’s Don Quixote songs the old man is clearly somewhat foolish. Some of the songs however come from the pen of composers when they were at the peak in the latter stages of their lives, such as Schubert’s Swan Song cycle, or Rossini’s Sins of My Old Age collection.
The program promises to offer variety of styles and moods, including the light-hearted.

Roger Wilson is one of New Zealand's most experienced resident singers. Originally from Dunedin, he studied in Zürich, Detmold and Cologne, beginning his professional career in Germany, France and Switzerland in the 1970s. Since 1978 he has lived in Wellington. He has a comprehensive concert and opera repertoire and has been engaged frequently as a soloist by the NZSO, NZ Opera and other orchestras, opera companies and choirs throughout New Zealand. He is also known as a recitalist, broadcaster and recording artist.

Roger has been a frequent soloist in Palmerston North over the years. From 1976 he has sung in recitals at Massey University accompanied by Guy Donaldson at the piano, as well as singing with the PN Choral Society and the Renaissance Singers in concerts when Guy was their conductor and music director. Guy is very active in Palmerston North as a piano recitalist, accompanist, teacher and adjudicator. He is also the convenor of the Globe Sunday Matinee series.

Admission is by donation, recommended from $5
