Lake Mangamahoe is a 262ha commercial production forest combined with a scenic park, lake and wildlife habitat. There are picnic areas, toilet facilities and ample car parking along with walkways, a mountain biking area, horse riding trails and an impressive view of Mount Taranaki.
Lake Mangamahoe supplies drinking water for New Plymouth District – because of this, boating, swimming, horse riding and camping in the immediate vicinity of the lake are prohibited. Horse riding and mountain biking are to be kept within the designated areas.
Lake Mangamahoe’s dedicated bridle trail is about 5km long with a few variations to the route. It would take a maximum of one hour to cover all the routes at a walking pace.
Lake Mangamahoe’s purpose-built downhill and cross-country mountain biking trails can be used by riders of all abilities. Access to the tracks is via a car park at the end of Plantation Rd (off SH3, just south of the lake's main entrance).
The lake circuit walk is 6km long (about two hours walking time). Rated medium to hard, it is enjoyable for people of all ages but a reasonable level of fitness is required due to undulating sections of the walk.
