Miramar Central School is widely recognised as a ‘Magnet School’ because of the unique opportunities it provides for all children; respecting and empathising with their individual and special needs, cultural backgrounds and the aspirations of their parents and caregivers.

The school is situated in the heart of the Miramar Peninsula in Wellington’s Eastern Suburbs and draws from a decile 6 multicultural community. The school attracts and enjoys wide community support. Fifty-six percent of the school roll has ethnic origins other than European. There are families from 19 different ethnic groups including NZ European 44%, NZ Maori 16%, Samoan 10%, Chinese 7%, Indian 6%, Cambodian/Khmer/Kampuchean 5% and Somali 3%. The school has a state of the art Special Education Centre providing for children with physical, sensory and intellectual learning needs.

There is a rich pool of skill and experience among teaching, support and administration staff. Ongoing professional and school development is considered vital in maintaining the school’s learning culture.

As well as the Special Education Centre the school’s facilities include a hall and library, an English as a Second Language Centre, a dental clinic, an adventure playground, Eastern Suburbs RTLB office, focused teaching areas and plenty of space for children to learn and play.

MCS is well resourced. In addition to teaching, administration and a large number of support staff, the school has a wealth of materials and equipment to facilitate and enrich student learning. Computers and information communication technology are increasingly integral parts of the teaching process.

The Board is fully conversant with its governance and employer roles and ensures the school fulfils its Charter obligations.

The school has an active PTA which has three key functions: Social, Educational and Fundraising. Donations from PTA funds make a significant contribution to the school’s resources

The context 5-10 years hence points to the increasing global impact of technology and the knowledge economy, and issues such as sustainability, security and safety.

Family structures will continue to change in their composition and complexity. Political pressures on education will continue to impact on the drive for accountability and improved standards. We must also ensure the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi are inherent within all facets of school operation.
