The Mount Surf Museum located at our TOtara Street store is the private collection and the brainchild of Mt Maunganui businessman Dusty Waddell. Dusty, an avid collector of classic
board, and historic surf memorabilia, needed somewhere to store his massive collection. The idea of a surf museum was the natural solution, and a great way to share and preserve of the classic history of New Zealand Surfing.
The mueum features over 500 original classic surfboards dating from 1945 - 1987, shaped by pioneers such as Bob Davies, Dennis Quane, Ted Davidson, Peter Way and Roger Land. You will also see replicas of the 4m planks used for surfing in the 1930's.
Among the collection are valuable private possessions of the legendary Malibu surfer Mickey 'Da Cat' Dora. Dora, the classic surf star/bad boy of the 1960's was a convicted fraudster. He came to New Zealand to hide 30 year ago, as he was wanted internationally. He rode the local NZ waves for about two years until caught by the authorities.
